Whoever came up with the phrase

Galiano Island

The new Gulf Islands appellation currently has 12 vineyards

and 103 acres of vines scattered across half a dozen islands.

The mild climate of this maritime region is very conducive

to grape-growing, although scarcity of water and extreme aridity

in summer present challenges.

Like the Okanagan and Fraser valleys, the Gulf Islands region

had a well-established fruit-growing tradition in the late 1800’s.

Today, a number of different grape varieties are planted

including Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, Gewurztraminer,

Riesling, Chardonnay and others.

With most vineyards only planted within the past decade,

many of the wineries also buy, or have bought, grapes from

the Okanagan and Similkameen appellations to supplement

their limited local production from young vineyards.

The Gulf Islands, a northern extension of the

American San Juan Islands, are situated between

Vancouver Island and the British Columbia mainland in the

well-sheltered Strait of Georgia.

The distance, as the crow flies, from Saturna in the south

to Quadra Island at the likely northern limit of island

viticulture is about 160 km.

Currently, there are six wineries scattered among the islands

. Saturna Island Family Vineyards, which opened in 1998

and has a 60-acre vineyard, is the largest and the oldest

continually operating winery on the islands.

Garry Oaks Winery and Salt Spring Vineyards opened in 2001

on Salt Spring Island.

Thetis Island Vineyards on Thetis Island and Marshwood

Estate Winery on Quadra Island opened in 2004, followed

by Morning Bay Farm on Pender Island in 2005 and

Carbrea Vineyard on Hornby Island in 2006.

Galiano Island Winery will open in the summer of 2007.

Gabriola Island Winery is a small family-owned business

and we hope that you enjoy our wines.

Middle Mountain Mead is an artisan honey winery

combining the best of ancient and modern techniques

to create small lots of premium handcrafted mead.

As well as being a superb wine, mead has been central to

rituals of celebration and remembrance down through the ages.

Our winery is set on Middle Mountain Farm,

3505 Euston Road Hornby Island.

This is an eagle on Hornby Island

There are terraced hillsides full of plantings including about

2,000 lavender plants blooming in June-July.

We also grow black currants, apples, and grapes, and

are stewards of some beehives as well.

Our tasting room features woven willow screens

and display areas created by Alastair Heseltine.

All of our wines are mead, or honey wine, and that means

that the base of all our wines is honey and water.

From there we can be inventive, adding herbs, fruits, spices

and other botantical elements.

Mead is delicious on its own or with a variety of foods, including

various cheeses and we’ve found it especially good with spicy foods.

Many of our meads are the perfect complement to dessert as well.

In the summer months, we’re offering tastings on the deck

Tuesday-Saturday 1-5pm.

We hope you drop by and visit.

Mead is available for sale in the tasting room, as well as

culinary herb blends and herb teas.

Wine Tasting Saturdays from 2:00pm to 6:00pm

Morning Bay’s 20 terraces climb 200 feet up the rocky south flank  of

Mount Menzies on North Pender Island off B.C.’s rugged west coast.

In the lee of rainshadows projected by both the 12,000-foo

t Olympic Peninsula and Vancouver Island, itself 6,000 feet in altitude,

Pender basks in a glorious mediterranean summer,

with long stretches of dry, sunny weather.

Over an eight month season, with hand-tending and careful

applications of water and nutrients, winegrapes ripen slowly and

develop complex flavours.

Hand-picked in late fall, grapes retain crisp aromatics

while developing long, elegant flavours.

Our unique gravily-flow winery uses natural processes to nurture

wines that bear the stamp of hand-craftsmanship.

Designed in the style of a barn, the two-floor winery keeps primary

fermentation upstairs, in the “hayloft,” and barrel and bottle storage

in the “manger,” where sub-grade construction and concrete

maintain a perfect wine-aging temperature.

Wines are easily moved using gravity and kept at the ideal

temperature for fermentation.

Our winery also features our Barrel Room, where private parties and

suppers can be held among the barrels, with the soft notes of our

grand piano in the background.

Every Thursday and Saturday beginning in June, join us for a farm,

vine and wine tour of our terraced vineyard, organic garden and

gravity-flow winery, followed by an exclusive tasting paired with

tasting plates of foods from our garden and the farms of Pender,

led by Barbara and Keith.

Make your dream Gulf Island wedding come true:

An oceanfront vineyard, a sunny summer afternoon, a crowd of friends

and family sipping bubbly in the shade.

Or perhaps exchanging vows high in the terraced vineyard with the

distant mountains in view.

Or a romantic candle-lit barrel room, surrounded by casks of wine

slowly aging as a pianist slowly weaves his magic on our grand piano.

Wine Tasting Summer: Wednesday to Sunday 10:00am to 5:00pm Winter: Friday to Sunday 1:00pm to 5:00pm Or by appointment.

Salt Spring Vineyards received the first winery license granted on

Salt Spring Island in the BC Gulf Islands.

They enjoyed that distinction for exactly half an hour,

as their neighbours down the hill received theirs thirty minutes later.

Two days after licensing, some fabulous Merlot was rushed

from the Okanagan into their destemmer-crusher.

When visitors come to the emerald isles scattered in the blue waters

of the southern Straight of Georgia, they soon forget the pull of their

hurried lives and start living the relaxed, peaceful

Gulf Islands existence

. Our desire is that you experience this pleasure and that if you must leave,

you will return as a friend.

Salt Spring Vineyards Wines include Pinot Gris, Millotage,

Pinot Noir Reserve VQA, Merlot Bin, Apple Pie Dessert-style wine,

and Blackperry ‘Port’.

Salt Spring Vineyards Winery is located high on Lee Hill overlooking

the Fulford Valley.

Saturna Island

Situated on a pristine bench of land between soaring sandstone cliffs

The vineyard enjoys a unique northern Mediterranean style climate

and is warmed by reflected sunlight from the cliff and moderated

by ocean breezes.

Saturna Island enjoys an extended ripening period resulting in grapes

that produce balanced, elegant, and thoroughly enjoyable wines.
