January Moving Tip: Boxes

Getting enough boxes for your move can be a challenge. The average two bedroom home will require about 20 boxes, plus picture boxes, a dish pack or two (depending on how much china you have) and a few wardrobe boxes.

Get a variety of box sizes and have them on hand so your packing momentum doesn’t get interrupted.

I recommend you use:

  • “2 cube” (small) boxes for heavy items like books, papers and tools

  • “3 cube” (Medium) boxes for kitchen and bathroom items

  • “4 cube” (large) boxes for lighter things like linens

  • Dish packs: double-thick cardboard boxes that are designed to protect delicate things like china and glass. Use lots of plain newsprint and bubble wrap to add further protection.

  • Wardrobe boxes for clothes: ask your mover to bring some for you to use on moving day.

Little known fact:

Most moving companies sell packing supplies. If you buy boxes from them, they will deliver them and save you from having to lug all those boxes home yourself. They will also take back your used boxes once you’ve emptied them.

Many moving companies also give out used boxes for free. I recommend that you use these to box up donation items.

When picking a mover, ask them about their box prices and if they give used boxes for free.

Lots of changes for me in the last month! I got married on November 24 to the most wonderful guy in the world. We celebrated with family in Whistler and then took off for a honeymoon on St Lucia…my first real holiday in years. It felt amazing to just relax and enjoy time with my new husband.

I’m now Anney Ardiel, another big change. I wonder when that will stop sounding strange?

The last bit of news is that in January I am opening a second location for Act Together Moving in White Rock to serve the Lower Mainland area.

I wish you a Merry Christmas and a healthy, happy and prosperous 2013!

Anney

Change and Stay Focused

My elderly clients have been wonderfully supportive and full of helpful advice about the changes in my life. Talking about my wedding really helped us to connect in a new way. Change is something we all have in common and my clients are going through huge changes just like me.

Change makes most of us nervous, and it can be stressful and overwhelming at times. Words of wisdom: Stay focused on your end goal. When I was stressing about a wedding detail last month, my friend Joan suggested that I focus on my marriage instead: the end goal. Immediately I felt a sense of relief–in time, this current crisis will not matter.

Through times of change, stay focused on what matters the most. If you are helping a senior through change, your reinforcement and focus on their end goal will keep the weight of the world off their shoulders.

Continuing on this topic, holidays are a time when families see changes in their elderly relatives. Families tend to spend more time that usual with parents or grandparents and perhaps see them in different situations outside of their normal routine. Changes in health, memory or emotions might become apparent so keep your eyes open
